For experienced walkers a self guided trek into Tasmania's majestic Walls of Jerusalem National Park should be high on the agenda. Only accessible by foot, this spectacular and remote glacier carved landscape is Tasmania's one true alpine National Park.

After a pre-trip briefing from our experienced operations team in Launceston, you are transferred to the trail-head for a short, steep hike to the comfortable base camp, complete with toilets and tent platforms. From here it's up to you where you wish to explore. Leaving your main gear at base camp, enjoy delightful day walks with light packs into the heart of 'the Walls'. You'll have the chance to climb King David's Peak and Mt Jerusalem, from where views stretch across much of Tasmania, or venture to remote outer regions such as Golden Gate or Zion Vale. The biblical names for the many highlights in the area adds to the imagery and drama of this other-worldly region that is void of the crowds of better-known trails in Tasmania. Each day you'll return to the base camp, situated near a cluster of beautiful alpine tarns known as Solomons Jewels, and surrounded by native wildlife.

This self guided walking adventure is a great introduction for those wishing to extend their hiking CV to independent walking in remote wilderness. With food, equipment, safety and transport taken care of, you are free to focus on making the most of the unique and unforgettable walking opportunities on offer in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park.

Itinerary

We pick you up early this morning in Launceston, from one of our two pick up locations. Our first pick up point is at 7:15am from the Grand Chancellor and our second pick up point is at 7:30am at the Penny Royal. We then start the transfer to the picturesque township of Deloraine. After a brief stop for coffee, we drive through the stunning Mersey Valley towards the mountains of the Great Western Tiers and Central Plateau. Arriving at the trail-head, you wave farewell to your driver and start your self guided walk. The track climbs through Eucalyptus dominated sclerophyll forest up to the historic Trapper’s hut; a great spot for a rest before tackling the final challenging section of this steep but rewarding ascent. Upon reaching the lip of the alpine plateau, the track levels out and the views open up all around you: grand, jagged peaks of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, sparkling glacial tarns and ancient conifer forests as far as the eye can see. In the afternoon you reach your base camp at Wild Dog Creek and set up your tent beneath King Davids Peak for your first night under the stars. Walking Distance: 6 km | Walking Time: 4 hours | Driving Time: 2-2.5 hours. *You will need to arrive in Launceston the day before your trip, ensuring that you arrive by early afternoon so that you have time to collect your provided gear and have your pre-trip briefing.

Meals:  L,D

This morning you can enjoy breakfast while watching the sunrise light up the surrounding wilderness. Then, in your own time, leave your gear and tents set up at Wild Dog Creek and carry only the necessities in a day pack as you head off to explore the central Walls area. A recommended day walk option is to follow the main track south-east through Herods Gate, past the sublime Lake Salome and then on under the imposing West Wall dominated by King Davids Peak and Solomons Throne. This will lead you to a track junction at Damascus Gate where you continue in a south easterly direction to slowly descend into the magnificent and ancient pencil forest of Dixons Kingdom. From the historic hut you follow a well defined path through Jaffa Gate, past an array of tarns before ascending the trail up to the top of Mt Jerusalem. From the summit you are given a superb panorama of the Walls and across the glittering expanse of 'The Land of A Thousand Lakes' that stretches across to the Central Plateau. Walking Distance: 8-12km | Walking Time: 6-8 hours

After breakfast and packing up camp at Wild Dog Creek the final day of your trip provides you with plenty of time to once again leave the bulk of your gear and wander back up the track to explore. You can climb a trail of amazing rock-work through the boulder field of The Temple for a final all encompassing view of this spectacular, irreplaceable World Heritage area. Alternatively, take the relatively short scramble up to the peak of Solomons Throne from where you can gaze along the ridge line to King Davids Peak and south west to Lake Adelaide, the head waters of the Mersey River. Both these walks are approximately 2 hours return from Wild Dog Creek base camp. Allow at least four hours to return to the car park from Wild Dog Creek. Your transport will be waiting to collect you at your pre-arranged time in the afternoon and transfer you back to Launceston, our two drop-off points in Launceston are the Grand Chancellor and the Penny Royal. Walking Distance: 6-13km | Walking Time: 4-6 hours *WANT TO SPEND MORE TIME IN THE WALLS OF JERUSALEM? Talk to us if you wish to extend your trip.*

Frequently Asked Questions

You can either leave your excess luggage at the hotel that you stay at the night prior to the trip beginning, or alternatively, we can store it for you at our office in Launceston.

Unfortunately there are no shower facilities in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. For those who are concerned about washing, the closest you’ll come to a bath are the alpine lakes that are accessible each day, where you can have a quick refreshing dip. However, for a real cleanse we recommend you bring baby wipes (remember to take them out with you as well!).

Tasmania prides itself on clean pure water and most of the water along the track is safe to drink without purifying. Our staff can let you know the best spots to fill up your water supply at your pre-trek briefing.

We suggest asking your pre/post tour accommodation about car parking or there are secure carparks in Launceston where you can pre-book a spot.

The trip runs between November and March when we have the best chance for warmer temperatures, but you are likely to experience all sorts of weather while in Tasmania. Tasmania is known for it's rapidly changing weather. You will need to be prepared to walk in all weather conditions as winds, steady rain, and even snow in elevated areas, can occur at any time of year.

In Spring (November) you will enjoy fewer crowds and the wildflowers are in bloom. Spring marks the return of longer, warmer days while still being cool at night.

In Summer (December to February) you can experience ideal weather conditions. This is the most popular time to walk in Tasmania so you may encounter more people on the trail.

In Autumn (March) you can experience calm, sunny days, and cool crisp nights. You can also witness some of the leaves and trees begin to change colours.

Self guided trips require individuals to use problem solving skills, be adaptable and have a keen eye. It is recommended that you are comfortable in the outdoors, with map reading, referring to route notes and that you have a good sense of direction (or are willing to work on improving this!).

The terrain is rugged and remote. Tracks may be rough and steep in sections. Over the trip you will walk along boardwalks, up and down steps, through overgrown forests, through muddy sections and scramble over rocks. This is a true wilderness walk.

You will need to have a good level of fitness for the Walls of Jerusalem Experience. You will be trekking in remote areas for up to 7 to 8 hours a day. Two days will be with a full pack weight (approx 14-18kg) and the other two days will be with a day pack. If you have any questions about your suitability please give us a call and speak with one of our staff members. We are more than happy to discuss additional information about what you can expect.

For your expedition you will need to carry all equipment in a full trekking backpack that is 75-90litres in capacity. Depending on the quantity of personal gear and toiletries the average pack weight will be approximately 15-18kg.

The day pack that we recommend should be a small compressible day pack that folds down to as small as your hand if not smaller. This is only to be used when you do side trips, as you will leave your 70-90L backpack at the trail head and return to it after the side trip. It is not mandatory that you have the day pack, but we find that it is convenient to have one. An example of what we suggest for a daypack is the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Day Pack.

Hiking poles can definitely assist you with going up and down the inclines and for stability in mud or slippery tree roots. If you have not used them previously, we recommend that you do some training with them before you head out on the hike.

We highly recommend that you have high cut hiking boots for this trail. There may be sections of the track that are slippery, so ankle support will be beneficial. Also, you may encounter mud along the way, so if they are waterproof, you will hopefully have nice dry feet at the end of the day.

Unfortunately there are no charging facilities in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. We recommend bringing extra batteries, a portable battery bank or solar charger for your phones. To conserve battery power on your mobile devices, turn your phones into flight mode.

As the Walls of Jerusalem is renowned as being a true wilderness walk, you cannot expect phone reception while on the trail. For certain mobile carriers, there is sometimes sporadic phone reception. However, this cannot be relied upon. You will be provided with an EPIRB to use should any emergencies arise.
